Create community-ranked lists, top lists, recommendations, and voting-based rankings as native XenForo threads.
Toplist Threads adds a dedicated thread type with a structured ordered list embedded directly in the first post. Members can vote on individual items to determine their ranking while the thread retains standard XenForo discussions, moderation, watches, prefixes, tags, and permissions.
Use toplists inside regular discussion forums or create dedicated toplist forums for rankings, best-of lists, recommendations, buying guides, collections, and community voting.
Features:
Thread-Based Toplists: Create structured toplists as native XenForo threads with standard titles, descriptions, replies, moderation, watches, prefixes, tags, and visibility.
Structured Item Editor: Add, remove, and reorder list items while creating or editing a toplist.
Item Details: Give every ranked item its own title and description.
Item Images: Upload item images or import them from URLs, with support for replacing and removing images while editing.
Community Voting & Rankings: Let members vote on individual items and automatically rank them by vote score, using the author's order to break ties.
Multiple Sorting Modes: Switch between community rating, author order, and newest items using AJAX without reloading the page.
Per-Forum Default Sorting: Choose the default item ordering independently for each forum.
Scheduled Voting: Set voting start and end dates and automatically close voting when the configured period expires.
Hidden Voting Results: Hide rankings while voting is active and reveal the final community ranking when voting ends.
Ranking History: Track historical item positions, scores, and vote counts after ranking changes.
Ranking History Charts: Review how item positions and community rankings have changed over time.
History Retention: Preserve recent ranking changes in detail while compacting older history into hourly, daily, and weekly snapshots.
Flexible Forum Placement: Enable toplist threads in regular discussion forums or use a dedicated toplist forum type.
First Post Integration: Display the complete ordered list directly inside the thread's first post.
Top Position Markers: Highlight the first three ranked items with gold, silver, and bronze position markers.
Expandable Long Lists: Use XenForo's expandable content handling when a toplist exceeds the configured display height.
New Toplists Widget: Display the latest visible toplist threads.
Popular Toplists Widget: Show popular toplists based on thread views and replies.
Voting Widgets: Display active voting, recently completed toplists, and weekly leading items.
Widget Display Styles: Choose between Simple and Standard XenForo widget layouts.
Structured SEO Metadata: Extend XenForo's discussion metadata with an ordered Schema.org ItemList containing item positions, descriptions, links, and images.
Useful for:
Community Rankings: Let members collectively rank products, games, movies, services, people, or other items.
Top Lists & Best-Of Lists: Create Top 10, best-of, favorites, and other ordered lists directly inside forum threads.
Community Voting: Build rankings where list positions are determined by member votes.
Recommendations: Create community-curated recommendation lists based on voting.
Buying Guides: Rank products, services, or options using community feedback.
Collections: Build structured collections while keeping comments and discussion in the same thread.
Comparisons: Let members vote on competing options and produce an evolving ranking.
Poll Alternatives: Use item-by-item voting when a standard XenForo poll is not flexible enough for ranked lists.
FAQ:
Which XenForo version is required?
XenForo 2.3.0 or newer is required.
Who can create and manage toplists?
Dedicated forum permissions control toplist creation and editing, while normal XenForo thread permissions continue to apply.
Do I need a dedicated forum for toplists?
No. Toplists can be enabled alongside regular threads in existing discussion forums or used as the default content type in dedicated toplist forums.
How are items ranked?
Items are ranked by their community vote score. The author's original ordering is used to break ties.
Can an author vote on items in their own toplist?
Yes, when own-item voting is enabled in the forum settings. It is disabled by default.
Can voting run for a limited time?
Yes. Voting can have configured start and end dates and close automatically when the voting period ends.
Can rankings stay hidden until voting ends?
Yes. Voting results can remain hidden while voting is active and be revealed when it ends.
Can I see how rankings changed over time?
Yes. Ranking history records item positions, scores, and vote counts and provides a historical position chart.
How is ranking history kept under control?
Administrators can configure how long exact snapshots are retained before older data is compacted into hourly, daily, and weekly points. Automatic maintenance can be disabled, and a manual rebuild tool is available in the ACP.
What happens when a toplist is taller than the configured display height?
XenForo collapses the list using its standard expandable-content control. Visitors can reveal the complete list without leaving the thread.
How are toplists represented to search engines?
XenForo's native DiscussionForumPosting metadata is preserved while the ordered list is represented using Schema.org ItemList structured data. Hidden results use author order until voting ends, and vote totals are not included.
